Summary:1485522 Reducing stress in electrical insulation WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 5 July 1974 [18 July 1973] 29847/74 Heading H1A [Also in Division H2] Electrical stress at the edge of a high voltage electrical conductor 34 where it is coextensive with, but spaced from a second conductive member 30, which extends beyond the first conductor and is insulated by layers of resin bonded tape, is reduced by the insertion of a material 40 of higher dielectric constant than that of the tape proximate to the edge of the first conductor. The insert may end at the edge of the first conductor, Fig. 3, or extend beyond it (Fig. 4). An additional insert beyond and below the first insert may also be provided (Fig. 5). The preferred insulating tape comprises mica. The preferred insert comprises barium titanate in a resin binder compatible with the resin used in the mica tape and giving a dielectric constant for the insert in the range 40-60. A dynamoelectric machine core with a slot may form the first member, and a conductor in that slot the second.
