Summary:1393727 Photographic processes to produce coloured images AGFA-GEVAERT AG 24 April 1972 [24 April 1971] 18882/72 Heading G2C Coloured images are produced by (i) imagewise exposing a light-sensitive layer to produce directly or indirectly an imagewise distribution of nuclei which are capable of decomposing peroxy compounds (i.e. compounds containing an-O-O-group) (ii) treating the layer with a peroxy compound which is decomposed by the nuclei and (iii) treating the layer with a colour-forming reactant which is oxidized by the remaining peroxy compound to form a dye, the reactant being an organic compound which contains a CN single or double bond and in which the C and N atoms are both directly bonded to separate aryl groups substituted with hydroxyl and/or amino groups or in which the N atom is a ring member of a 5-or 6-membered saturated or unsaturated ring (in which ring the N atom may be quaternized). The light-sensitive layer may be as disclosed in Specifications 1268126, 1307559, 1329444 and 1332692 which use noble metal salts, silver halides, photoconductive oxides, organic halogens, simple or complex salts of metals of Groups VIb, VIIb or VIII of the Periodic table or certain proteins; silver halide, complex ferric salts and TiO 2 being used in the layers of the examples. The colourforming reactant is preferably of formula wherein R 1 and R 5 are aryl groups substituted with 1 or more hydroxyl and/or amino groups and may have additional substituents; R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen, alkyl or aryl or R 1 and R 5 , or R 4 and R 5 together with N atom complete a saturated or unsaturated 5-or-6-membered ring; provided that when R 1 and R 5 complete a ring, R 2 is an amino-or hydroxyl-substituted aryl group. The reactant may be used admixed with other aromatic amines, phenols and/or aminophenols in a processing solution or may be present in the light-sensitive layer. The preferred nuclei are nuclei of Ag, Au, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt.
