A diagnostic reagent for the detection of nitrite and nitrite forming bacteria, e.g. in urine, comprises a substrate, e.g. filter paper impregnated with an alcoholic soln. (MeOH) of a diazotisable amine, a coupling component for the diazonium salts which has the general formula:- wherein R is H or Alkyl and R1 is H, OH, alkyl or acyloxy, and a solid organic acid. The diazotisable amine may be sulphanilamide, sulphenilic acid, arsanilic acid or p-aminobenzoic acid; the acid may be oxalic, tartaric, citric or malic. |
