Summary:1,240,422. Dicyanopyridines. MERCK PATENT G.m.b.H. 23 Feb.,1970 [22 Feb., 1969], No. 8643/70. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] Compounds of formula Wherein X is O-O, -NH- or -S- and R is hydrogen, halogen, -NO 2 , -SO 3 H, C 1-8 acyl or -NR1R2 in which each of R1 and R2 is hydrogen, C 1 _ 8 acyclic hydrocarbon or C 1 _ 8 acyl, are prepared by (a) chlorination of a compound of formula wherein R1 is hydrogen or an alkali or alkaline earth metal equivalent, or (b) interconversion of the substituents R by halogenation, sulphonation, acylation, nitration and reduction of nitro to amino followed by optional N-acylation or other N-substitution. The products have pesticidal activity (see Division A5). Starting materials of the second formula above are prepared by reaction of a compound of formula with cyanacetamide under alkaline conditions.
