Summary:1,241,573. Ni permanganite. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 20 Aug., 1968 [1 Sept., 1967], No. 39786/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division H1] Ni manganite in which some of the Ni may be replaced by Co is prepared by precipitation from an aqueous solution containing Mn, Ni and optionally Co ions, with base, at 0-100‹ C., followed by calcination at a temperature of 300 to 800‹ C. The chloride, nitrate, or sulphate may be used. The base may be NaOH, KOH, NH 4 OH, gaseous NH 3 , or Mg, Ca, Sr, or Ba hydroxide, and may be used in an amount of 70-130% of stoichiometric. In examples, the NaOH may contain Na 2 O 2 or KMnO 4 . Mixing may be effected in either order, either instantaneously or over 15-20 mins., and preferably with intensive stirring. The precipitate may be dried at 120‹ C. and calcined in stages e.g. at 400, 600 and 740‹ C., with intermediate grinding, then slow or quick cooled. The product has the formula (Ni 1-x Co x ) y Mn z O 3 , where 0 # x # 0.2 and y: z is in the range 1À1 : 1À0 to 1À0: 1.1 and has an ilmenite structure.
