PROCESS AND CATALYST FOR POLYMERIZATION OF ALPHA-MONOOLEFINS HAVING THREE OR MORE CARBON ATOMS PER MOLECULE

Polymers of alpha mono-olefines are made by polymerizing the chosen monomer in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (1) at least one compound of at least one metal selected from Group IVb, Vb, VIb, or VIII of the Periodic System, (2) at least one organometallic compound of at least one metal...

Summary:Polymers of alpha mono-olefines are made by polymerizing the chosen monomer in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (1) at least one compound of at least one metal selected from Group IVb, Vb, VIb, or VIII of the Periodic System, (2) at least one organometallic compound of at least one metal of Group Ia, IIa, IIIa, or IVa of the Periodic System and (3) at least one compound of the general formula AR3, or AR13X2, in which A denotes nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, or bismuth, R denotes hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyaryl, or halogen, R1 denotes hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyaryl, or halogen, X (monovalent) denotes halogen, aryl, alkyl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl, or X2 (divalent) denotes oxygen, sulphur, selenium, tellurium, or =NH, compounds of the type AR3 having three halogen atoms being excluded. The Periodic Table referred to is that published in "The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics" pages 394/5, 38th Edition 1956/7, by The Chemical Rubber Publishing Co. Specified alpha-mono-olefines are propylene, n-butene-1, 3-methylene-butene-1, pentene-1, 4-methylpentene-1, and 5-methylhexene-1. Component (1) of the catalyst may be titanium trichloride, vanadium trichloride, vanadyl chloride, chromic chloride, chromium oxide, chromyl chloride, or titanium acetylacetonate. Component (2) may be lithium butyl, beryllium diethyl magnesium diethyl, aluminium triethyl, aluminium trimethyl, lead tetraethyl, tin tetraethyl, aluminium diethoxymonoethyl, or aluminium diethyl chloride. Component (3) maybe triethyl or tri-n-butyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphine oxide, triphenyl phosphine imine, phosphorus oxychloride, phenylphosphorus dichloride, N,N-dimethylaniline oxide, pyridine-N-oxide, trimethylamine-N-oxide, triethylamine-N-oxide, triethyl arsenite, trimethyl arsenic oxide, triethyl arsenate, trimethyl-arsenic sulphide, trimethyl-arsenic dichloride, triethyl antimonite, antimony oxychloride, pentaphenyl antimony, triphenyl-antimony dichloride, trimethylantimony oxide, triphenyl-antimony oxide, trimethyl antimony dichloride, triphenyl-antimony dichloride, phenyl-antimony tetrachloride, triethyl-antimony sulphide, pentaphenyl bismuth, triphenyl-bismuth difluoride, triphenyl-bismuth dibromide, or triphenyl-bismuth dichloride. The catalyst is preferably preformed in a grinding mill, in the presence of a solvent, and the catalyst "aged" by heat-treatment. The polymerization is effected in the presence of conventional solvents and diluents.
