Summary:Lubricant additives comprise a copolymer of (a) a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated heterocyclic nitrogen containing compound, and (6) an ester of acrylic acid and an aliphatic alcohol, which alcohol has a molecular weight of 800 to 10,000, the ester having the formula <FORM:1035011/C4-C5/1> wherein R1 represents hydrogen or a C1- 4 alkyl radical or an aryl radical, and R11 is the residue of the aliphatic alcohol. The preferred monomers (a) are vinyl pyridine and vinyl pyrrolidine. The additives may be used in hydrocarbon oils, synthetic lubricants, e.g. polymerized olefine, organic esters and polyalkyl silicone polymers, gasoline or fuel oils. They are preferably used in proportion of 0.1 to 10%, optionally in the presence of other additives, e.g. antioxidants and antiscuffing agents such as phenols, amines, phosphorus and thiophosphorus acid esters and phosphosulphurized terpene salts.ALSO:An oil-soluble copolymer comprises (a) a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated heterocyclic nitrogen-containing compound and (b) an ester of an acrylic acid and an aliphatic alcohol, which alcohol has a molecular weight of 800 to 10,000, the ester having the formula <FORM:1035011/C3/1> wherein R1 represents hydrogen or a C1- 4 alkyl radical or an aryl radical, and R11 is the residue of the aliphatic alcohol. The monomer (a) is preferably a vinyl pyridine or a vinyl pyrrolidone. Suitable alcohols from which monomers (6) are derived can be obtained from polyolefine or petroleum feedstocks via the Oxo process. The polymers may be prepared by random or block copolymerization. Block polymerization is preferably carried out in solution using anionic catalysts.
