Summary:1,137,431. Automatic lathes. P. KUMMER. 22 March, 1966 [31 March, 1965], No. 12641/66. Heading B3T. An automatic lathe comprises a headstock 2, Fig. 4, a workspindle rotatable in the headstock, a tool turret 4 indexable about its axis, and movable along its axis against spring means, by a cam and lever 22, 19. The head stock is movable towards the tools 8, 8a along guides 1a by a cam and lever 24, 25, and is retracted by spring means. The turret 4 is indexed by means 14 comprising an electric motor, and a Geneva mechanism, and it is locked in an indexed position (15), (16) or (17), Fig. 3 (not shown), by a bolt (18). In a modification, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the tools (32), (32a), (33) and (34) are supported on slides (29-31) which are longitudinally moved together by a rod (37), which carries pegs (38-40), the rod being actuated by a cam. In a further modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), a tool carriage (42) is moved longitudinally when located at a top position on the turret (41), by a lever (48). In the lathe of Fig. 9 (not shown), the head stock (50) is fixed and the tool turret is mounted on rods (53), (54), which are longitudinally moved by a cam and lever (62), (56). The tool turret (63) of Fig. 10 (not shown), is placed with its axis at the same level as that of the work spindle (64), and a work holder (72) is provided, which supplies the work to the spindle from a magazine (73) during indexing of the turret. In the lathe of Fig. 11 (not shown), the axis of rotation of turret (75) is not normal to the axis of the workspindle (76). The feed of the headstock (77), and, the axial feed of the turret, are produced by hydraulic pistons (89) and (82), the supply of fluid to these pistons being controlled by a copying device (85), having a feeler (84) actuated by a template (79) carried by the turret. The turret may be copy controlled in place of the headstock.
