Summary:A self-sustaining solid fuel grain, suitable for providing the ionized working fluid to an MHD generator, consists of polymethyl methacrylate (fuel), ammonium perchlorate (oxidizer) and potassium carbonate (seed) homogeneously mixed together. The solid grain is moulded and perforated to give the desired burning characteristics. Alternatively, if the grain is not selfsustaining but has a controlled external supply of oxidizer, a homogeneous mixture of 95% by weight of a polymethyl methacrylate monomer seeded with 5% by weight of caesium nitrate may be used.
