[Also in Division A5] Novel derivatives of nicotinamide of the formula wherein R is C 1-6 alkyl, or an arylalkyl group which may or may not have substituents in the aromatic nucleus; the substituents being, if present, halogen atoms, hydroxy or methoxy groups are prepared by reacting in a suitable solvent at a temperature of 20‹ to 100‹ C. the appropriate 1 - phenyl - 2,3 - dimethyl - 4- alkylamino-S-pyrazolone with nicotinamide and formaldehyde, in a molar ratio ranging from 1:1 1 to 1: 1: 4 respectively.
