Summary:1,159,045. Cooling motors; frames. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 13 Sept., 1967 [3 Oct., 19661, No. 41716/67. Headings B7D and B7H. An electric drive vehicle has a hollow frame 10 upon which is mounted a generator 16 and a drive wheel support housing 18 in which are mounted a pair of electric motors, the cooling air for the motors and generator being supplied from a blower 20 through the hollow frame. The air is divided into two streams by a baffle 28 which are directed by a baffle 31 into a duct 32 and thence outwardly in two directions between the rotors and stators of the motors. A baffle 33 deflects some of the air from one stream into a conduit 34 for cooling the generator 16. Shields 24 and 26 prevent the air in the frame from escaping forwardly. The baffle 31 may be adjusted laterally so as to vary the volume of air directed to the generator and to the motors. The blower may be driven electrically or by power take-off from the vehicle prime mover 15.
