Summary: | In the preparation of polymers of olefinic compounds using a catalyst formed by admixing an organometallic compound and a vanadium compound, coloured vanadium constituents in catalysts residues present in the polymer are removed by first treating the polymer and residues with an oxidizing agent having a pH below 9 in an amount sufficient to oxidize the vanadium constituent to the vanadium (V) state and the convert the oxidized vanadium constituent to the vanadate salt form with a solution of an alkaline compound at a pH between 9 and 14. Oxidizing agents include nitrites, persulphates, peroxides, and hypochlorites. Alkaline compounds include alkali metal hydroxides, and alkaline nitrogenous compounds such as ammonia and amines. Exemplified polymers are copolymers of ethylene and propylene or C6-C7 alpha-olefins. |
