[Also in Division A5] Novel compounds of the formula (wherein R 1 is H, halogen, C 1-4 alkyl, phenyl, phenylalkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, C 1-4 alkylamino, di- (C 1-4 alkyl)-amino or phenylamino; R 2 is H, halogen or C 1-4 alkoxy; and R 3 is H, halogen or NO 2 ) and carboxylate salts thereof are prepared by condensing anthranilic acid or a salt thereof with the appropriate 4-halo-pyrimidine. In the products halogen atoms R 1 and R 2 , if present, may be replaced by H or alkoxy, or R 1 may be replaced by substituted amino. 2 - Benzyl - 4,6 - dichloropyrimidine is prepared by condensing phenoaceto-amidine acetate with diethyl malonate to give 2-benzyl-4,6 dihydroxypyrimidine, and refluxing this with phosphorus oxychloride.
