Summary:A detergent composition comprises sodium salts of sulphonic acids of the formula <FORM:1096911/C4-C5/1> in which R is a C4- 16 straight chain alkyl radical, R1 represents -NH2, -NHR2, -NHCH2CH2OH, -NHCH2CH2NH2, -NR2R3, -OR4 or -NHCH2COOR6, and R2, R3, R4 and R6 represent C1- 4 alkyl radicals, or analogous compounds of the above formula in which one or more amino hydrogen atoms are replaced by -CH2COOR7 radicals (wherein R7 represents hydrogen, an alkali metal ion or a C1- 4 alkyl group), in admixture with sodium perborate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium silicate, sodium sulphate, carboxymethylcellulose and conventional lather boosters, perfumes, anti-corrosion agents and fluorexers.ALSO:Novel sulphonic acids of the formula <FORM:1096911/C2/1> in which R is a C4- 16 straight chain alkyl radical, R1 represents -NH2, -NHR2, -NHCH2 -CH2OH, -NHCH2CH2NH2, -NR2R3 -OR4 or -NHCH2COOR6, and R2, R3, R4 and R6 represent C1- 4 alkyl radicals, and alkali metal salts thereof, are prepared by reacting betasultones of the formula <FORM:1096911/C2/2> with an amine of the formula R11NH2, wherein R11 represents hydrogen, C1- 4 alkyl, -CH2-CH2NH2, -CH2CH2OH or -CH2COOR6, with an amine of the formula HNR2R3 or with an alcohol of the formula R4OH, followed, if desired, by neutralization with an appropriate alkali. Corresponding quaternary betaines are formed if the above beta-sultones are reacted with tertiary amines such as trimethylamine. Further novel sulphonic acids corresponding to those of the above formula in which one or more of the amino hydrogen atoms are replaced by -CH2COOR7 radicals (wherein R7 represents hydrogen, alkali metal ions or C1- 4 alkyl groups) are prepared by reacting suitable sulphonic acids corresponding to those of the above formula with compounds of the formula Cl-CH2COOR7. Beta-sultones of the above specified formula are prepared by reacting suitable olefins with a sulphur trioxide/dioxane complex or a sulphur trioxide/thioxan complex. Sulphur trioxide/dioxane complexes are prepared by reacting gaseous dioxane and sulphur trioxide in an evacuated chamber.
