Summary:A polymerizable composition comprises a monomeric unsaturated polymerizable compound (A), a polymer of said compound (B) and a polymer (C) which contains the repeating grouping (-CH2-CCl=CH-CH2); wherein (A) and (B) are present in the form of a partial polymer prepared in the presence of (C), at least one substance (D) which has the effect of initiating polymerization only on heating, or at least one constituent (E) of a catalyst system, advantageously a redox system, which system is effective without heating, the said constituent in itself having no polymerization-initiating effect at ordinary temperatures; and, if desired, other additives (F) which improve the properties of the composition. Compounds (A) specified are methyl, butyl and decyl-octyl methacrylates, glycol dimethacrylate, ethyl acrylate, acrylic acid acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl toluene and vinyl acetate, which may be used in admixture with one another, e.g. methyl methacrylate+styrene, or with other unsaturated compounds, e.g. fumaric acid and maleic esters, methacrylonitrile and unsaturated polyester resins. Polymer (C) is polychloroprene. Substances (D) specified are azodiisobutyronitrile, and bis-(tolylsulphone methyl) -amine, -methylamine, -ethylamine and -benzylamine. As constituent (E) there are specified sulphinic acids and aminosulphones, which may be used in conjunction with peroxides, and amines such as dimethyl aniline, dimethyl-p-toluidine and diisopropylol-p-toluidine, which are supplemented prior to use by the addition of peroxides, e.g. benzoyl, chlorobenzoyl and lauroyl peroxides. As optional additives (F) there are specified waxes, e.g. paraffin, montan and bees wax, and spermaceti. The compositions find particular application as adhesives, for which purpose they may be used directly in uniting surfaces, e.g. of metals, or may be used in conjunction with fibres, mats and woven fabrics. In applications of the latter type the fibrous material may be pretreated with a compound containing a labile chlorine atom, a dialkylolamine containing an aromatic radical or a tertiary aromatic amine, examples of such compounds are hydrochloric acid and its salts, quaternary chlorides, betaine and hydroxylamine derivatives, e.g. those of Specification 786,843, diethylol, diisopropyl and di-n-butylol p-toluidines, diisopropylol-m-toluidine, tetramethyl diaminodiphenyl methane, diacetic esters of diethylol-p-toluidine and N-tert-butylol-N-methylaniline. Also present on the fibres or in the polymerizable compositions may be ingredients of other known accelerator systems, e.g. copper compounds, aminosulphones, hydroxysulphones and mercaptans.
