Summary:1,074,925. Closing filled bags. RHEEM MANUFACTURING CO. April 2, 1965 [Oct. 1, 1964], No. 14118/65. Heading B8C. A device for applying a permanent fastener around a container, e.g. a bag or casing neck, includes a housing formed with a track for clips, having a fixed die at one end, a reciprocable punch, lever means mounted on the housing to drive the punch towards the die, and detent means operatively connecting the punch member and lever means for holding the punch in a retracted position. The casing end is introduced via a throat (60), Fig. 3 (not shown), to a die (28). A track (22), into which the clips (29) are fed from a magazine 20, reciprocably receives a punch (25) secured to a rod 45, spring-loaded toward the die (28). On manual withdrawal of the punch, using a gripping knob 48, against the pressure of spring 52, a clip (29) enters the track (22), the punch being held in its retracted position by a member 53 entering a detent groove 55 in the punch (25). The member 53 is carried by a lever 11, pivoted at 10. The lever, and member 53, are urged by a spring 56 in an anti-clockwise direction. By moving the lever 11 away from the housing, the punch is sprung forward, forcing a clip along the track (22) to the die (28), impact being minimized by the action of a spring 59. The lever is now gripped to move it towards the housing, link member 53 abutting the punch 55 at 63 to force it forward, and hence force the clip (29) against the die (28) and around the casing end. The die face carries two channels, the track (22) and punch (25) being slantingly disposed to the horizontal to permit one leg of the clip to enter each channel. The magazine 20 is complementarily slanted, Fig. 7 (not shown), the arrangement causing the clip to be bent to helical form. The fastened casing end is withdrawn by the downward displacement of a spring-biased guard plate 32.
