Summary: | A drilling mud contains a poly-N-vinyl-carboxylic acid amide as protective colloid. As well as the vinyl group an N-alkyl group containing up to 6 carbon atoms may be present. The acid may be acetic acid or a homologue containing up to 6 carbon atoms (excluding the carbonyl group). Polymers exemplified are poly-N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide and poly-N-vinyl-N-propylpropionic acid amide. The polymers may have a K-value of 85. The muds contain 5-50 Kg. of polymer per cubic metre, while the clay is in amount 2-10% by weight. |
