Summary:Compounds having the formula <FORM:1000508/C3/1> in which R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups having 1-5 carbon atoms, m is 2, 3 or 4 and x is an integer of 1-50 are prepared by the reaction of compounds having the formula <FORM:1000508/C3/2> with compounds having the formula XRX in which R is a polyalkylene oxide chain and X is a halogen atom.ALSO:Compounds having the formula <FORM:1000508/C2/1> in which R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups having 1-5 carbon atoms, R4 is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms, Q is an alkylene or aralkylene radical which may be interrupted by ester, ether or sulphone linkage and may have a valence which is equal to n and n is equal to 2 may be prepared by the reaction of compounds having the formula <FORM:1000508/C2/2> with dialdehydes of, for example, the formula OHCRCHO in which R is an alkylene radical, epoxy compounds of, for example, the formula <FORM:1000508/C2/3> or compounds of the formula XRX in which X is the group <FORM:1000508/C2/4> and R is an organic radical which may contain conjugated unsaturation or ester linkages or is a sulphone group or in which X is a halogen atom and R is an aralkylene or alkylene radical and is preferably a polyalkylene oxide chain.ALSO:Proteinaceous fibrous materials, e.g. wool, camel hair, mohair, horsehair, human hair and silk, are modified by reacting them with a polyfunctional aziridine compound having the formula <FORM:1000508/D1-D2/1> in which R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups having 1-5 carbon atoms, R4 is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms, Q is an organic radical which is joined to the remainder of the molecule by carbon to carbon bonds and has a valence equal to n, and n is 2 or 3. Wool in the form of fibres, threads, yarns or fabrics may be shrinkproofed and feltproofed by the process. Suitable polyfunctional aziridine compounds are those obtained by the reaction of compounds having the formula <FORM:1000508/D1-D2/2> with polyfunctional aldehydes, polyfunctional epoxy compounds, compounds containing conjugated unsaturation, compounds containing activated double bands, e.g. divinyl sulphone or ethylene glycol biscrotonate, or polyfunctional halides, e.g. compounds having the formula XRX in which X is a halogen atom and R is an aralkylene or alkylene radical and is preferably a polyalkylene oxide chain. The fibres may be treated with an aqueous solution containing 1-10% by weight of the polyfunctional aziridine compound, dried at room temperature or an elevated temperature and allowed to stand at room temperature or at a temperature up to 350 DEG F. for from a few minutes to several hours until the reaction is complete. The reaction may be catalysed by pretreating the, fibres with a low concentration of a mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric acid. Fabrics comprising wool fibres alone or in admixture with nylon or polyester fibres may be treated.
