Summary: | 6b ,19-Oxido-steroids are prepared by treating 6b -hydroxy-10-methyl steroids with an oxidative metal acylate in the presence of iodine and under the influence of a free-radical initiator. Suitable initiators are azo compounds and peroxides, the former preferably having the formula: <FORM:0944268/C2/1> (wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen, or R1, R2, R3 and R4 are the same or different alkyl or aralkyl groups, or R1 and R2 and/or R3 and R4 together form a cycloalkyl group). Suitable acylates are lead tetraacylates and silver and mercury acylates, and the reaction may be performed in an organic solvent to which is preferably added a weak base. Steroids of the androstane, pregnane, cholane, cholestane and spirostane series may be used, particularly important being those saturated in ring A and possibly containing a 5-halogen atom. Examples are given. U.S.A. Specification 3,067,198 is referred to. |
