Summary:899,253. Two-part couplings; semi-conductor devices. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Dec. 10, 1958 [Dec. 18, 1957], No. 39821/58. Classes 37 and 38 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] A cartridge containing a crystal contact device consists of conductive posts 9, 10, Fig. 1, respectively supporting a contact wire 1, of, e.g., tungsten, and a crystal 2 consisting of, e.g., a silicon wafer doped with 0.02% boron. The crystal may be mounted by evaporating gold on to the back surface and pressing it into an indentation in the post 4 which has previously been tin-plated. The device is enclosed in a quartz tube 11 cemented to the posts. The cartridge is supported in a waveguide 30 by means of annular clamping inserts 32, 33, Fig. 5, carrying pairs of springs 41, 41 and 47, 471 which bear on diametrically opposite sides of the conductive posts 9, 10 and make electrical contact with these. The lower (earthed) insert 32 fits within a receptacle 34 threaded into a ring 35 on the broad side of the waveguide. The upper insert 33 fits within, but is insulated from, a cylindrical receptacle 39 which carries the outer conductor 38 of a coaxial socket. The inner conductor 37 fits within the insert 33. Elements 33, 39 together constitute a by-pass capacitance for high-frequency currents.
