Summary:Impressions of objects for dental or other purposes are taken by producing a pasty mixture comprising a polymerizable vinyl compound, a solvent capable of forming a gel with the vinyl compound in its polymerized state, and a filler and/or a substance which increases the viscosity of the solvent, adding a polymerization catalyst so as to initiate polymerization of the vinyl compound and contacting the pasty mixture with the object before gelformation while in contact with the object. The vinyl compound may be methacrylic or acrylic acid or mixtures thereof with fumaric and maleic acids; instead of the acids, their salts, amides or hydroxyalkyl esters may be used. Preferably a monofunctional vinyl compound is used in admixture with a polyfunctional vinyl compound which may be a polyamide of acrylic or methacrylic acid and an organic compound containing at least two amino groups such as ethylene diamine or hexamethylene diamine, or may be triacrylformal. The catalyst may be potassium persulphate or a redox system may be used; polymerization may take place under the influence of ultra-violet light. The solvent may be water or glycerine or a mixture thereof. Suitable fillers are calcium sulphate and carbonate, titanium dioxide, aluminium oxide, magnesia, magnesium carbonate, zinc oxide, filaments of linear polyamides, bentonite and talc, and substances which increase the viscosity of the solution may be silica gels, agar-agar, gelatine, dextrine, methyl cellulose, sugar, alginates and polyacrylates.
