Summary:482,090. Making glass fibres. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP MAATSCRAPPIJ TOT BEHEER EN EXPLOITATIE VAN OCTROOIEN. June 22, 1937, No. 17336. Convention date, July 24, 1936. Addition to 482,085. [Class 56] Relates to the method of forming glass and siliceous fibres described in the parent Specification, and consists in drawing the fibres upwards from the body of molten material in order to increase the resistance to the drawing- action. The glass is melted in a crucible 4 by the passage of electricity between electrodes 7. The crucible is also provided with a melter 12, of platinum or platinum alloy and of the shape shown, which is open at the bottom and terminates in a number of openings with nipples 13 at which the molten glass is exposed. A surface plate 17, which is supported by a refractory block 18 and is preferably integral with the melter 12, extends across the surface of the glass and is heated electrically to maintain the temperature of the glass in the nipples 13. The glass as it issues from the nipples is cooled by air from a blower 25, as described in the parent Specification, and it is drawn into fibres 27 by a rotating drum 32. The fibres are coated with wax &c., by a pad 33 or other suitable applying-device, and are assembled into a thread by an eye 30.
