Summary:524,118. Tool spindle mounting for milling machines. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Jan. 23, 1939, No. 2276. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1938. [Class 12 (i)] The tool spindle 22 of a milling machine is mounted in a column 10 having front and rear walls 11, 12. The front wall 11 has roller bearings 16, 27, the inner race rings 19, 29 are fixed to the spindle and abut a collar 21 and a gear 32 respectively. The outer race 18 has an abutment 17, and the outer race 28 is slidably axially to preload the bearings. The axial movement is obtained by a screwed sleeve 37 which is rotated by a worm 41. The spindle 22 is mounted in the wall 12 by a double row roller bearing. The outer race 47 is slidable in the housing bore and the inner races are splined to the shaft and located between a nut 53 and a gear 52. The gears 32, 52 are thus located very close to the walls 11, 12, and bending of the spindle 22 is avoided.
