Summary:Aspects of the subject technology relate to structures and methods for facilitating optical coupling and beam collimation in photonic integrated circuits. A photonic structure can include a waveguide and a grating coupling structure coupled to the waveguide for emitting first electromagnetic radiation fed through the waveguide into a first region adjacent to a first side of the grating coupler structure and second electromagnetic radiation fed through the waveguide into a second region adjacent to a second side of the grating coupler structure. The structure can also include a reflection structure disposed in the first region adjacent to the first side of the grating coupler structure and configured to reflect at least a portion of the first electromagnetic radiation back through the first region, the grating coupler structure, and into the second region.
