Summary: | Optical couplers having a gradient-index (GRIN) lens and methods of their fabrication are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of fabricating an expanded beam coupler for propagating an optical signal having a wavelength includes attaching a gradient-index lens to an end-face of an optical fiber, the gradient-index lens having a pitch length that is less than one-quarter, and applying optical radiation to the gradient-index lens until the pitch length of the gradient-index lens is one-quarter. |
