A method includes measuring a density of the at least one gas; at least one of a) heating and b) cooling the at least one gas with a first thermal input; determining a first rate at which the at least one gas changes temperature when at least one of a) heating and b) cooling the at least one gas; comparing at least one of the density and the first rate to a reference database of gases; and determining at least one of a) a category b) a lower explosive limit and c) a concentration of the at least one gas.
