Summary:The invention provides apparatus for implementing a computational system comprising: a colony of live microorganisms and a receptacle in which the microorganisms are able to be stimulated to cause a reaction or to modify their physiology or behaviour. Monitoring apparatus tracks the reaction or changes in the physiology or the behaviour of the microorganisms in response to stimulation; and processing circuitry makes calculations, including machine learning, based on or coupled with the reaction of the microorganisms, or their physiological or behavioural changes. The invention also proved a method of implementing a computational system comprising stimulating a colony of live microorganisms with a stimulus whose pattern is derived from input data, or allowing the stimulation with an external stimulus. The reaction or modification is monitored and output data based on the reaction or modification is derived.
