One example method includes reading wireless tags on items at a checkout station by a wireless tag reader, reading barcodes on a number of the items at the checkout station by a barcode reader, comparing the number of items with read barcodes to the items with read wireless tags, and issuing an alert when the number of items is less than all of the items.
