Summary:Described herein are devices and methods for limiting the torque applied to surgical screw during a surgical procedure in which a surgical screw is passed into a vertebra, such as, for example, a spinal fusion procedure. A surgical screw driver is configured to prevent an excessive amount of torque from being delivered to the vertebrae through a surgical screw. When an excessive amount of torque is delivered to the handle of a surgical screw driver, it is prevented from being transmitted to the surgical screw and is thus not delivered to the vertebrae. Excessive force in the form of excessive torque transmitted to a vertebrae may cause a fracture along with possible mispositioning or displacement of a surgical screw.
