Summary:The illumination optical system illuminates an illumination surface. The illumination optical system includes a first optical system configured to cause a light flux from a light source to form a light source image, and a second optical system configured to introduce the light flux from the first optical system to the illumination surface. The second optical system includes in order from a first optical system side, a first lens having a positive power, a second lens having a negative power, and a third lens having a positive power. The second optical system satisfies conditions of 0.20≦ν2/ν3≦0.75 and 0.4≦BF/Fall<1.0 where ν2 represents an abbe number of the second lens, ν3 represents an abbe number of the third lens, Fall represents a focal length of the second optical system, and BF represents an air-equivalent distance from the third lens to the illumination surface.
