Summary:The present invention relates to a biocompatible implant comprising one or more metal(s), metal alloy(s), metal oxide(s) or a combination thereof, wherein a compound selected from the group consisting of an IP, an ester of an IP, and/or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or a combination thereof, is/are covalently bound to at least a part of a metal, metal alloy or metal oxide surface of said biocompatible implant. The covalent bond between the IP and the metal, metal alloy or metal oxide surface can be further assisted by the use of a linker. An implant according to the invention provides for a modulated and/or improved osseointegrative effect when implanted into a body, such as a mammalian body, by virtue of the coating comprising covalently bound phytate.
