Summary: | A liquid crystal display apparatus and a television receiver enable an improvement in visibility in a low-tone range in a configuration in which the brightness of a backlight is changed on the basis of brightness information relating to an image. The apparatus includes an APL curve setting portion and a histogram luminance modulating portion which adjust the brightness of the backlight and a tone signal on the basis of the average brightness of the image and the brightness histogram of the image. A black extending portion applies gamma correction to the tone signal adjusted by the histogram luminance modulating portion on the basis of a previously set gamma value. |
