Summary:An image reading apparatus and a control method thereof, which enable accurate determination of a document size. The image reading apparatus includes a cover provided with a mark pattern having a preset length to sense a width of a document, a light source to irradiate light to a region where the mark pattern is formed, an image sensor to produce an image upon receiving the light reflected from the region where the mark pattern is formed, and a controller to determine the width of the document based on a length of a region of the produced image where a constant pixel value is sensed.
