Summary:The invention relates to a method for improving the safety of a fuel tank by (1) supplying to the fuel tank a fuel and a flame suppressant, wherein the fuel tank contains two or more compartments, at least one compartment containing fuel, and at least one compartment containing flame suppressant, and wherein the compartment containing flame suppressant is either: (i) located to the exterior of the fuel tank, (ii) located within the interior of the fuel tank, or (iii) mixtures thereof; (2) rupturing the fuel tank and the compartment containing flame suppressant; and (3) mixing or otherwise contacting the flame suppressant with fuel from the fuel tank.
