Summary:An image display apparatus including an image display unit, a light source unit, an illumination optical system configured to guide light from the light source unit to the image display unit, and a display optical system configured to guide light from the image display unit to a viewer is disclosed. With such an image display apparatus, luminance non-uniformity viewed at an exit pupil can be suppressed by intentional provision of uneven luminance distribution to an optical surface that receives light from the light emitting device of the light source unit.
