The monitoring system comprises a range detection system configured for scanning a scene to provide range data, the range data including data describing range to a marker that is detectable by the range detection system and that is placed on a hand of an individual in the scene; and a data processing system configured for processing the range data to identify the marker, to identify the hand based, at least in part on the range to the marker, and to monitor hygienic activity of an individual in the scene.
