Summary:A horizontal shaft type windmill includes a rotor 10 that includes a hub 2 and three pieces or more of blades 4a, 4b, 4c, a nacelle 3 that pivots the rotor 10 through a rotational shaft connected to the hub 2, a tower 1 that supports the nacelle 3, and a control unit that controls at least the pitch angle of the blades 4a, 4b, 4c, in which the control unit detects that the rotor 10 rotates freely and the pitch angle of one of the blades 4a has become uncontrollable, and sets the pitch angle of the blades that are normal 4b, 4c to a pitch angle of fine side or negative fine side upon detecting the blade whose pitch angle has become uncontrollable 4a.
