The processing device comprises first calculation means based on the shape of an object letter for calculating an object characteristic value indicating the characteristics intrinsic to the object letter as the characteristic value of the letter, comparison means for comparing the object characteristic value with either the reference characteristic value indicating the characteristics intrinsic to the reference letter as the characteristic value of the letter or a predetermined reference value, and decision means for deciding the characteristics of the object letter in accordance with the comparison result of the comparison means.
