Summary:High birefringence (Deltan) liquid crystals (LCs) have various uses in the field of display technology, for example the conventional display devices like STN-LCDs, reflective displays, PDLC and cholesteric display. The goal of this invention is aimed to synthesize a series of new high Deltan LCs based on naphthalene. The synthesized LCs are characterized by NMR, IR and Mass spectroscopies. Their mesomorphic properties are measured by DSC and optical microscope. Finally, the birefringence of the obtained liquid crystals are also measured. The liquid crystal synthesized in this invention, have potential application in reflective display.
