An electrical discharge machining apparatus in which machining electric power is supplied by a machining electric power supply means (13) between an electrode (1) installed in machining liquid (3) and an object (2) to be machined, the object (2) is machined by relatively moving the electrode (1) and the object (2) by a positioning means, and jumping is possible, comprises a machining reaction force sensing means (20, 21, 22) that measures the machining reaction force, a machining reaction force specified-value setting means (23) that sets a specified value of the machining reaction force, a machining reaction force comparison means (24) that compares the measured value of the machining reaction force measured by the machining reaction force sensing means (20, 21, 22) and the specified value of the machining reaction force set by the machining reaction force specified-value setting means (23), and a motion locus changing means (25) that changes the locus of the jumping motion so as to reduce the machining reaction force when result of the comparison by the machining reaction force comparison means (24) shows that the measured value is larger than the specified value. Damage to the main shaft driving parts and the like and degradation of the machining accuracy are prevented, and the machining productivity is improved.
