This invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of 1-alkyl-3-methylpiperidone-2 and 1-alkyl-5-methylpiperidone-2 form 2-methylglutaronitrile wherein the selectivity of the process to bis-1,5-(methylamido)-3-methylpentane is less than 8%.
