Summary: | The invention relates to a process for the oxidation of p-xylene and methyl p-tolulate with oxygen-containing gases in the Witten-Hercules process for preparing dimethyl terephthalate in at least two sequentially arranged part-stages and in the presence of a catalyst. It involves oxidizing in at least one p-xylene-rich part-stage some of the p-xylene, with or without recirculated products having oxidizable contents from subsequent stages of the DMT process, in the presence of 5 to 30 percent by mass of methyl p-tolulate, based on the oxidation mixture of the part-stage, and/or in at least one further methyl p-tolulate-rich part-stage, oxidizing methyl p-tolulate and/or p-toluic acid with or without recirculated products in the presence of 2 to 30 percent by mass of p-xylene, based on the total of methyl p-tolulate and p-toluic acid. |
