Summary:This invention relates to a positive temperature coefficient element, which is prepared by kneading mixture of mesophase microbeads (MPMB) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and then pressing with metal foil. The composition of MPMB in the mixture is 65 to 40% in volume, and preferably 55 to 50%. The average partical size of MPMB is 3 to 30 m. The spherical MPMB improves kneading processing of mixture. An addition of 1 to 10% MPMB in volume to the mixture of HDPE and carbon block for PTC composites effectively reduces difficulty in kneading process. Tests show that volume resistance coefficient of this invention is smaller (below 10 ohm-cm) compared with ceramic PTC. Volume resistance coefficient for electric break-down reaches above 1000 ohm-cm. Low-resistance and small-volume PTC elements can be made by this invention, which is beneficial to the present market for compact electrical-circuit design.
