The present invention provides a coating composition that has excellent stability over time, and exhibits excellent transparency when formed into a coating film. The present invention is a coating composition that comprises a zirconium element-containing metal oxide (A) and a silane compound (B), the coating composition being characterized in that the zirconium element-containing metal oxide (A) has a [zeta] potential value of at least 30 mV as measured by the following method. <Method for measuring [zeta] potential> 10 mass% of a zirconium element-containing metal oxide (A) aqueous dispersion is measured at room temperature (25 DEG C) by using an electrophoretic laser doppler method.
