Provided is a space filling material excellent in strength for reinforcing a space as well as for fixing a material to be fixed where filled in a predetermined space. The space filling material 11 includes reinforcing fibers and a thermoplastic resin, wherein the reinforcing fibers form a plurality of intersections and are bonded with the thermoplastic resin at least a part of the intersections. The space filling material 11 contains the reinforcing fibers having a tortuosity of 1.004 or higher at a volume ratio of 20 vol% or more based on a total volume of the reinforcing fibers, wherein the tortuosity is defined as a ratio of a fiber length based on a displacement of the fiber, i.e., a shortest distance between opposed ends of the fiber. By heating, the thermoplastic resin comes to be softened, and curvature of the reinforcing fibers is released to make the space filling material 11 to be expanded so as to fill the predetermined space 13.
