The above-described problem is able to be solved by a metal material for plastic working, which has a first coating film on the surface of the metal material, while having a second coating film in or on the surface of the first coating film, and wherein the second coating film serves as a surface layer and contains a compound that has a benzene ring to which at least one carboxy group is directly bonded, or a salt or peroxide of the compound.
