The present invention provides a dispersant for suspension polymerization, which, when used for the suspension polymerization of a vinyl compound, can exhibit high plasticizer absorbability even in a small amount, does not cause defects such as fish eyes, does not undergo the formation of coarse particles, and enables the easy removal of remaining monomer components. The present invention relates to an aqueous solution of a dispersant for use in the suspension polymerization of a vinyl compound, said aqueous solution of the dispersant containing a vinyl alcohol-type polymer (A), wherein the vinyl alcohol-type polymer (A) has a degree of saponification of 45 mol% or more and less than 60 mol% and a remaining vinyl ester group block character of 0.60 or less, the viscosity ratio of the aqueous solution of the dispersant satisfies the formula: 1.1 ≤ ([eta]40wt%/[eta]35wt%) < 1.6 (wherein the description of each symbol is omitted), and the viscosity of the aqueous solution of the dispersant is 1000 to 4000 mPa.s
