The invention relates to an improved method and an improved apparatus (2) for producing a thin glass ribbon (1) having a thickness of not more than 300 [mu]m, which provide for severing thickenings, called borders (7, 8), at the edges of the thin glass ribbon (1). Thereby, edges (11, 12) of high mechanical quality are formed, and a formation of new secondary borders after the severing from the ribbon-shaped molten glass (3) is prevented or at least the thickness of such secondary borders is reduced compared to the original borders (7, 8).
