Summary:The invention relates to an improved method and an improved apparatus (2) for producing a thin glass ribbon (1) having a thickness of not more than 300 [mu]m, which provide for severing thickenings, called borders (7, 8), at the edges of the thin glass ribbon (1). Thereby, edges (11, 12) of high mechanical quality are formed, and a formation of new secondary borders after the severing from the ribbon-shaped molten glass (3) is prevented or at least the thickness of such secondary borders is reduced compared to the original borders (7, 8). In particular permanent mechanical stresses in the glass are avoided as far as possible after the severing. To this end, the thin glass ribbon (1) is drawn from a molten glass (3) or from a preform (18), the borders (7, 8) are severed from the thin glass ribbon (1) by a severing device (9), and the resulting glass ribbon is cooled down.
