Summary:A method for producing xylene easily produces xylene in high yield using catalytic cracking gasoline that has a low aromatic hydrocarbon content, and includes an unsaturated hydrocarbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and the like, as a raw material for a conversion reactions such as a disproportionation reaction or a transalkylation reaction. The method for producing xylene includes (a) a fractional distillation step that subjects fluid catalytic cracking gasoline to fractional distillation to obtain a fraction having a boiling point of 145 to 205 DEG C, (b) a hydrotreating step that subjects the fraction having a boiling point of 145 to 205 DEG C obtained by the fractional distillation step (a) to hydrodesulfurization/denitrification to adjust the sulfur content and the nitrogen content to 0 to 6 mass ppm and 0 to 6 mass ppm, respectively, and (c) a disproportionation/transalkylation step that subjects the product oil including an aromatic hydrocarbon obtained by the hydrotreating step (b) to a disproportionation reacti
