The invention provides a liquid crystal display element with an excellent residual image property and a good orientational stability. The liquid crystal display element of the invention has: a pair of substrate disposed face to face; an electrode group formed on one or two respective facing surface of the pair of substrate; a plurality of active element connected to the electrode group; a liquid crystal orientational film formed on a respective facing surface of the pair of substrate; and a liquid crystal layer formed between the pair of substrate; wherein the orientational film is produced by the following steps: emitting a light polarized in a straight line to a coating film obtained from a polyamic acid or a derivative thereof having a photoisomerization structure in a main chain or a film obtained from a step of firing the film, endowing an orientational controlling ability; and wherein the liquid crystal layer is a liquid crystal composition having a negative dielectric anisotropy.
